This 1996 Golf GTI was built to SCCA’s Improved Touring rules for ITB class. Modifications include braking systems, suspensions systems, engine management tuning, and other safety systems.
In addition to the race upgrades for ITB the car has been further developed for endurance racing with a fully functional drink bottle system, cool suit system, 23 gallon fuel cell, and full data logging capability.
This car as campaigned in SCCA and NASA has won multiple endurance championships at the 12 Hours of Summit Point, 13 Hours of VIR, and the Nelson Ledges 24 Hour race. In addition it has won numerous other races including the prestigious American Road Race of Champions at Road Atlanta in 2007 which pit’s the best IT Production based racers in the country against each other, and is usually a stepping stone for IT racers to higher forms of racing such as Speed World Challenge and Grand Am Cup/Koni Challenge.
Flatoutracing.net’s Jon Kofod is one of a hand few of successful drivers who has piloted this car to victories in the 12 Hour of Summit Point, most recently this past June when Kofod did an unbelievable 3 ½ hour stint at night to win the 12 Hour race.
“It’s bullet proof and we call it the tank because usually anything that runs into it is done for the race, while the GTI just soldiers on. It’s also a very balanced car that is easy to drive for long periods of time, which is crucial when you spend 3 plus hours in the car. Lastly, Team GTI and owner Kirk Kenestis run the most professional top shelf effort at every race so we are always ahead of our competition.” notes Kofod. |
