This 1988 BMW is powered by BMW's legendary 3.5 liter S38 twin-cam 24-valve inline-six race engine, which was the basis for BMW's racing efforts in the 70's in Formula 2 and Touring cars. This same engine powered the 460 horsepower M1 Procars and was later used in various limited edition Motorsport production cars including this E28 chassis M5.

This particular M5 is set up to run in "Modified" class in BMWCCA's TireRack Championship Series and the National Auto Sport Association's GTS Challenge Series. With the help of upgraded cams, straight pipes, and a performance ECU, this engine makes in the neighborhood of 290 horsepower. |
The car has a complete Ground Control coil over race suspension with 1000 pound springs at all four corners and Advanced Design three way adjustable race dampers. Stopping power is supplied by huge 4 piston mono-block Porsche GT2 endurance brakes at the front with 330 mm discs and 4 piston Porsche Boxster S brakes at the rear.
The entire interior has been stripped out and the car weighs in at just under 3100 pounds. A competition GT Cup Momo seat and Momo competition harnesses have been installed. In addition a Kearney 's custom eight-point roll cage designed to SCCA and Speed World Challenge specifications provides maximum safety.
Lastly, a Quaife race differential and 17 inch Revolution lightweight race wheels running Hoosier slicks provide excellent traction. |
