Zimmermann Wins Summit Point, Kofod Wraps Up Second Consecutive Honda Challenge Title!

Summit Point, Oct. 14th - 15th

Press Release Photo

This past weekend the Flatoutracing/Team iCarp squad encountered every imaginable scenario in placing first and second in this season's NASA Pro Racing East Coast Honda Challenge. It was never in doubt that Flatoutracing/Team iCarp would take home the H4 title, just which teammate would hoist the trophy. Jon Kofod and Andrew Zimmermann have dominated H4 for most of the season. Kofod only needed to finish both races to take the title, a seemingly easy feat that at times this weekend looked shaky.

During Saturday qualifying Kofod ran wide at turn ten and had a scary trip through the gravel trap, wet grass and then ended up spinning across the front straight nearly taking out Zimmermann in the process. Kofod still managed a few laps to get pole but had to come in when his oil temperature got to 280 degrees. The team spent the afternoon working on the car to get it ready for the race.

With Kofod on pole, 2002 Honda Challenge H4 champion James Evans lined up second just one tenth of a second behind Kofod's time. Zimmermann was in third followed by Trevor Melville in an H4 Prelude. Evans got the jump on Kofod in turn 1 and the two battled bumper to bumper for six laps until Kofod went wide in turn 10 for the second time in a day and careened through the gravel trap and into the wet grass. Kofod was able to gather the car back up and wasn't able to mount a serious challenge to Evans who cruised home for the win with Kofod second, followed by teammates Zimmermann and Ian Carpenter.

For Sunday's race Evans sat on pole with a blistering lap of 1:27.56. Evans got another great start in his JE Import Performance CRX and Kofod and Zimmermann got bogged down between slower traffic. Evans checked out and was never seriously challenged. Kofod stayed ahead of Zimmermann, but the two battled each other for 4 laps. Zimmermann finally got by in turn 1 after getting a run on Kofod in turn 10. Kofod attempted several passes and put pressure on Zimmermann, but Zimmerman drove a flawless race to beat Kofod to the checkered flag. 2004 H4 Co-Champion Ian Carpenter struggling with an ailing car came in what appeared to be 4th.

However, at impound Evans car was found to be underweight and his disqualification moved Zimmermann up for the season ending win with Kofod in second and Carpenter and Melville rounding out the finishing order.

Kofod garnered his second consecutive Honda Challenge title with his 2nd place finish and Zimmermann came in second as Flatouracing/Team iCarp (sponsored by Guident Technologies and Hankook Tires) dominated the H4 class again this year.

Tremendous thanks goes out to our two main sponsors, Guident Technologies, Inc. and Hankook Tires USA. Guident Technologies has been our primary sponsor since we (Flatoutracing.net) entered Honda Challenge in 2004 and has provided invaluable support in helping us win two consecutive titles in Honda Challenge.

Hankook Tires sponsored Team iCarp in 2004 and again this year with the merger of Flatoutracing.net and Team iCarp. Hankook's Ventus race tires set two lap records this season in Honda Challenge and took home a combined 10 wins between Zimmermann and Kofod. In SCCA, Hankook and Guident powered the team to an overall class win in the grueling "12 Hours at the Point" endurance race this past June. The team became the first ITA team to win the 12-hour in its first attempt.

"The Hankook tires were awesome this year. Last year we had to change to new tires every race weekend. This year on Hankook's we were able to double and triple stint tires with little loss in performance" noted Kofod.

Lastly the team wished to thank those people behind the scenes either at the track or at the shop. Special thanks iCarp and Ian Carpenter for his coaching and assistance. Specials thanks to Sean Banerjee for this help in the pits on race weekends. Special thanks to my guys at Curry's for their help in prepping my car for each race weekend including Steve Pilkerton, Trevor Bell, Troy Bittle, and Dan Howell.
