After a one year hiatus, Flatoutracing.net driver Jon Kofod will return to the annual 12 Hours of Summit Point endurance race with a new team and car. Kofod won the 2006 12 hour race at the helm of teammate Andrew Zimmermann’s Acura Integra. That effort lead to a maiden victory in ITA class and an astonishing 7th place overall finish.
This season, Kofod will be racing with the Conover Engines/ PhilsTireService.com Team GTI in an ITB class prepared VW Golf. Team GTI is no stranger to endurance racing having competed successfully over the past few years in some of SCCA’s toughest endurance races at place like Summit Point, Carolina Motorsports Park and Virginia International Raceway. In 2005 Team GTI won the 12 hour race at Summit Point in ITB class. This was followed up by consecutive second place finishes for both the 2006 Summit Point 12 hour race and the VIR 13 hour endurance race.
Team GTI is owned and operated by Kirk Kenstis and sponsored by PhilsTireService.com, Conover Engines, Koni Shocks, and Bilden Motorsport. Mr. Kenstis accomplishments include road racing in the IMSA Renault Cup, SCCA ITC class, and ESCORT Pro Endurance Show Room Stock Series between 1986 and 1990. Between 1990 and 1998 Kenstis switched over to rallying competing in 40 NORPAC Divisional rallies. Highlights include more than 15 class wins, one overall victory, and the 1997 NORPAC Divisional U2 class championship.
Joining Team GTI in his third season will be Phil Phillips of PhilsTireService.com. Phillips has over 15 years experience in road racing with both SCCA and NASA. Recent accomplishments include back to back Honda Challenge H3 championships, and various regional SCCA road racing titles in E Production class racing an Acura Integra GSR.
The new addition to this team this season, Kofod brings with him varied experience ranging from Skip Barber Formula Dodge, Spec Racer Ford and IT Production car racing. Kofod was 2004 and 2005 Honda Challenge H4 Champion. In addition he was co-driver for the Flatoutracing.net/iCarp team which won the 2006 12 Hours at the Point and finished 7th overall. Kofod was both runner up champion and rookie of the year this season in the Mid Atlantic Road Racing Series ITA class with four wins, four pole positions and five fastest laps.
Rounding out the squad is Matt Brown of MB Racing. Mr. Brown has over ten years of racing experience ranging from 600cc sport bikes, 100cc Yamaha sifter karts, Spec RX7 class, to his recent years racing in SCCA’s competitive Spec Racer Ford class. Brown has raced at VIR, Summit Point, Watkins Glen, Pocono, and Mid Ohio in recent years and rounds out a strong Team GTI line up that will be one of the favorites in this year’s 12 hour race.
