Jon started his racing career doing club events with BMWCCA and other organizations in the mid 90's. Jon graduated with a race license from the Skip Barber Racing School in 2000. In 2001 Jon received his SCCA Regional and National Race license and placed first in class, second over all, at SCCA's licensing school. In the past few years he has competed in everything from a 100 hp Spec Racer Ford to a 400 horsepower F355 Ferrari Challenge car. In addition he has competed in a BMW M5 in BMWCCA events and also raced a Formula Dodge RT/2000 in the Eastern Regional Skip Barber Formula Dodge series with a podium finish at Lime Rock in July of 2001. Jon finished the series in 5th place overall and was chosen for the "Most Improved Racer of the Year Award".
In 2002 and 2003 Jon raced for Hagerman RacEngineering in SCCA's competitive Mid Atlantic Road Racing Series (MARRS) where he was runner up for Rookie of the Year honors in Spec Racer Ford class in 2002. In 2003 Jon competed in both the MARRS series and the Pro Spec Racer Ford series running 5 races.
In 2004 Jon switched to NASA Pro Racing's East Coast Honda Challenge Series winning the competitive H4 championship title in the closest championship to date in Honda Challenge. Jon won 7 races, had 5 pole positions, set 5 fastest laps and broke both the existing Summit Point track records in H4 (NASA) and ITA (SCCA) by half a second. Jon also achieved a streak of seven straight podium finished in consecutive race weekends. In addition Jon also competed in the NASA Pro Racing Nationals at Mid Ohio in August finishing 3rd in a race that pitted the best Honda Challenge racers in the country against each other.
In 2005 Kofod competed in both SCCA and NASA. In June Kofod co-drove the number 18 Flatoutracing/Team iCarp ITA Integra to victory in SCCA's annual "Kumho Tires 12 Hours at the Point" becoming the first team to win the event in it's first attempt. Kofod set fastest lap in ITA for the race. Kofod also successfully defended his 2004 H4 title again in 2005 by winning 8 consecutive races and garnering an H4 record 9 pole positions along with several track records.
In 2006 Kofod made the switch over to SCCA’s ITA division and narrowly missed his third straight Championship in the Mid Atlantic Road Race Series (MARRS) by the closest of margins missing the title by only a few points. Facing much larger fields and even tougher competition Kofod brought home four race wins, one second place and one third place finish during the nine race season. In addition Kofod sat on pole four times and set fast race lap five times.
2007 saw Kofod’s third title in four years as he won the Mid Atlantic Road Racing ITS championship with three wins, three second place finishes and one third place finish. Jon sat on pole 5 times during the season. Although he started the season contending for the ITA title, narrowly missed in 2007, two consecutive engine failures persuaded the team to move up to the faster ITS class which proved to be the correct decision.
